RailSchool.org will be a
community resource leading to employment, creating aspiration for a
professional rail career in 14-19 year olds, and a pool of high-quality
trained recruits to the rail industry, with the objective of addressing
the gap between ‘Basic Skills’ and the expections the transport industry
has of its people.
RailSchool is working closely with Newham College of Further Education,
which is a Centre of Excellence for Vocational Training. Rail is a major
and growing employer in Newham and the surrounding Eastside Boroughs:
Docklands Light Railway, North London Railway, East London Railway,
London Underground, support and service businesses such as Serco, Metronet
and Tube Lines, the main line operators c2c, ‘one’ and across the river,
Southeastern, as well as Network Rail and its suppliers.
The demand for railway staff is more consistent now than at the heyday
of Stratford Depot and yards, but railway work requires high standards.
The objective is to stimulate and retain the interest of young people
and job-seekers in a railway career and prepare them for it, so provide
the rail companies with a pool of recruits who already have a knowledge
of safety, culture, business and the industry’s language, with suitable
levels of medical fitness. Local rail companies will positively recognise
the qualification during the recruitment process.
The RailSchool curriculum will include visits to established railway
technical schools and recruitment centres, such as ‘one’ railway’s Academy
at Stratford, as early preparation for recruitment and selection.
